Maho Beach St Maarten

No visit to St Martin would be complete without experiencing a jumbo jet flying ridiculously close to your head. There is no other place in the world where you can stand in the jet path of a plane; Maho Beach St Maarten is unique. This is where the runway almost meets the beach, separated only by a narrow road and a low wire fence. You may think that the photos are superimposed, but they’re most defiantly not. Without experiencing it for yourself, it’s hard to imagine what it’s like to have the full force of an aircraft engine, only metres away from you, blow directly in your face – an incredible feeling. Remember to bring your camera when you visit Maho Beach St Maarten!

If you would prefer to keep a little distance between yourself and the planes, then head to The Sunset Bar & Grill at the far end of the horse shoe shaped beach. From here you can watch the jets arriving and departing from a safe distance without getting sand blasted. This is also a very famous bar where ladies can drink for free if they are brave enough to sip on their chosen beverage topless!

Maho Beach St Maarten is also an awesome location to watch the sunset. Two very popular complexes, The Maho Reef Resort and The Royal Islander Hotel, are two great spots for a late afternoon cocktail and a few snacks.

If you are a cruise ship passenger and are only stopping on St Martin for a limited amount of time, it is possible to book a direct tour to Maho Beach in order to witness the jets arriving into the airport. This is a great option to ensure you don’t miss the planes but still return to the cruise boat in time for your departure.

Maho Beach St Maarten itself is a small stretch of white sand with no natural shade from trees, although it is possible to hire chairs and umbrellas. The majority of people who visit Maho Beach are there to see the jets, rather than spend the day soaking up the sun, but there are some good spots for snorkelling so it’s worth bringing your mask and snorkel to explore. The beach is not ideally suited for young children as there is a rather steep slope into the sea, however, the Caribbean Sea on this coast is normally always calm and flat.
