Le Trou David St Martin (Devil’s Hole)

One of the most interesting natural landmarks on the island is definitely Le Trou David St Martin, also known as Devil’s Hole. Le Trou David is a natural sinkhole of about 80 feet in diameter. It is located between Baie Rouge and Pointe de Bluff.

The Trou David St Martin can be accessed via a dirt road where the road to Baie Rouge meets the Terres Basses main road. When you park at the end of the road, the hole itself will be on your left side. Depending on the tide you will have to enter the water that is quit shallow, to climb up to the sinkhole. Climbing up to the sinkhole is pretty easy. On the wall of the hole you will often see large Iguanas sunbathing on the rocks. From the outside the hole is part of a cliff and the reef follows around the end where you can see the beach of Baie Rouge.

You can also access the hole by sea, departing from the beach in Baie Rouge. Two arches lead from the sea into the hole itself and you can swim through the large left arch. Be careful as the current may be a bit strong sometimes. The main attraction is the reef outside the hole. This area is filled with tropical fish and coral. You are sure to bump into some hawksbill turtles. The reef area extends out a couple of hundred feet and is about 25 feet deep. Le Trou David St Martin is actually one of the best snorkelling spots on the island of St. Martin/St. Maarten.

At Pointe du Bluff there are a series of shallow pools on you right and the coastline gives you access to the beach of the abandoned hotel La Belle Creole overlooking the bay of Marigot.

This area is probably the richest, most beautiful natural reef that is accessible from the shore on Saint Martin and sea and well worth a visit. As a bonus, you can visit the ruins of La Belle Creole, a resort that was abandoned after Hurricane Luis in 1995.

Peaceful, beautiful and truly amazing. I sat on a comfy hammock and made piles of seashells that was relaxing.
