Hiking in St Martin
Hiking in St Martin is a great way to discover our beautiful island of St. Martin/St. Maarten. Much of the land and sea in the northeastern corner of our island is part of the National Nature Reserve. The contrast between lush vegetation and dry scrub on the island is quite striking. Along the coastline, frigate birds, brown pelicans, iguanas and over 25 animal species coexist. You can also discover as many as 182 plant species. The Reserve covers 3060 hectares of land and sea and has been designated a special zone for the preservation of numerous animals and plants, It is not unusual to see, sea turtles, large dolphins and humpback whales during the months of January and April as they begin to adopt the area as their hunting and breeding ground of choice.

Hiking in St Martin at Le Sentier des Froussards is one of my favorite hikes. It is a small trail that passes along the north coast and it takes about 2,5 hours to walk this 4,5 km trail from Anse Marcel to Grandes Cayes. Halfway there, you can stop at Petits Cayes for a dip in the Caribbean.

There are 12 known hiking trails around the island, but local hiking experts will say about 17:
Northeast Ridges: 4,5 km – Pic Paradis – Orient Bay
Central Ridges: 6,5 km – Pic Paradis – Col de Concordia, Mont St.Peters
Southwestern Ridges: 4,5 km – Mont St,Peters – Fort Amsterdam
